International
Year of Astronomy 2009
The International Year of Astronomy (IYA) is a global initiative
by the International Astronomical Union and the United Nations Educational,
Scientific and Cultural Organization. It celebrates significant
milestones in the field of astronomy including the 400th anniversary
of Galileo’s use of the telescope to study celestial objects
and the 400th anniversary of Kepler’s publication Astronomia
Nova. The goal of IYA is to celebrate astronomy and
draw public awareness to the oldest of all sciences, astronomy. The
Kingman Museum will be participating in this initiative by holding
events that correspond with the international events, such as 100
Hours of Astronomy and Astronomy Day and by organizing special events
of our own. We will also be showing a special planetarium show,
Two Small Pieces of Glass, which was made specifically for the
International Year of Astronomy to celebrate the invention of the
telescope.
We hope you’ll join us in celebrating the
International Year of Astronomy!
July 7- First Tuesday Lecture at Kingman Museum,
6:00 pm
Kingman Museum invites you to celebrate the Year of
Science by attending Dr. Kirk Korista’s presentation, “Galaxies
through Cosmic Space and Time.” Dr. Korista will present an
image-filled overview of the major constituents of our Milky Way,
the essential properties of the various "animals" within
the galaxy zoo, and of some recent breakthroughs in our understanding
of the nature of galaxies through cosmic space and time.
