Keep your car Green and Clean!
As
the weather warms up, people start washing the winter build-up of
dirt and salt off their cars. Did you know washing your car at home
can use up to 500 gallons of water? That’s a lot of water! Also,
if you wash your car in the driveway that water will run into storm
drains and eventually into rivers, lakes, and streams carrying all
the pollutants found on your driveway. But don’t worry. There
are several ways to “green” your car washing routine. First,
you can wash your car on the lawn, rather than the driveway, which
will reduce contaminants picked up from the driveway and allow the
water to be filtered naturally. An even greener option is to
use a biodegradable or waterless cleaner, such as those made by Simple
Green, Eco Touch, Freedom, or Lucky Earth. Another option is
to visit a commercial car wash. On average, commercial car washes
use 32-45 gallons of water per car wash and many recycle and reuse
their water. Commercial car washes are also obligated to dispose
of their wastewater through the sewer system where it gets treated
before reentering the environment.
