BYOB…Bring Your Own Bag

During the holidays many of us do a lot of shopping, be it for gifts or big holiday meals.  While shopping, we obtain a multitude of bags that have no use beyond carrying our purchases home.  Rather than collecting these paper or plastic bags, take your own bags with you when you shop.  Most stores are happy to accommodate you and will pack your purchases into reusable bags.  In addition, several grocery stores and major department stores now sell reusable bags at a low cost.  The average American uses 350 bags a year.  Both plastic and paper bags require resources to produce and they cause unnecessary harm to the environment.  Paper bags are made from trees and plastic bags are made from petroleum.  Both require energy to make and have limited recyclability.  There are also problems associated with plastic bags entering waterways and suffocating marine life.  Because of the risks associated with both paper and plastic bags, reusable bags are the best choice for the environment.
