Collection Department Projects
Collection Inventory

In September 2009, Kingman Museum completed the collection catalog
project funded by a grant received from the Institute of Museum
and Library Services. The grant
allowed Kingman Museum to hire a part-time data entry person and
a collection intern. Since 2007 trained volunteers and staff cataloged
Kingman Museum’s entire collection and entered those records
into its database, PastPerfect. Volunteers are now completing an
inventory of the collection storage rooms to clean up any discrepancies
and up date old object numbers given while the museum was owned by
the Battle Creek Public Schools. Regular inventories are necessary
to make sure objects are located where the database says they are
supposed to be.
If you are interested in volunteering for this project, or would like to know more information, please
contact Katie Nelson.
Geology Exhibit Renovations

Kingman Museum received a second grant for $3000
from the Society of Exploration Geophysicists this past summer.
Funds were used to construct a new wall in the lower level gallery
to create a better flow and separation between the geology and
paleontology galleries. Staff are working on bringing the core
samples back out on display and creating a space to showcase the
luminous minerals, a favorite visitors’ display. The City
of Battle Creek wrote a grant for the purchase of a water model
that will be displayed on the lower level. The model will be used
to teach visitors about the water cycle, ground water, and the
impact of pollution. This interactive exhibit will be a hit with
visitors of all ages!
Kingman Archives

Kingman Museum received a grant from the Miller
Foundation to fund a part-time archivist and pay for some archival
materials. Our archival intern, Jon Kirkwood, has recently completed
the organization and digitization of the Brigham Family Archives.
Jon will be organizing Kingman Museum archives into five main groups: E.M.
Brigham, Sr., E.M. Brigham, Jr., Kingman Museum of Natural History,
Kingman Museum, Incorporated, and financials. Archival records,
photographs, and slides will be scanned using a state of the art
scanner funded by the Non Profit Alliance. Community groups are
welcome to utilize the scanner as well and can make appointments
with Katie Nelson.
Online Collections

The Collections Department has begun putting collection items online
with its Artifact of the Month (link to the page) website
article. Staff and interns are working towards providing more access
to Kingman’s
collection on its website. Look for future pod casts featuring our
more popular objects in 2010. Also, don’t forget to checkout
our Blog and read about the Collection Department
adventures.
