February Volunteer of the Month
Don Vire
Don began volunteering in October 2007 in the
collections department. Don answered a press release asking
for volunteers to help catalog Kingman Museum’s collection.
While many volunteers signed up because of the press release
only a handful stuck through the completion of this two and
half year project. Don has volunteered over 400 hours working
in Kingman’s collection rooms writing descriptions, locations,
measurements, and taking photos of a variety of objects. Don
not only is a hard worker, but provides useful suggestions
to the collection staff that help make the cataloging process
more efficient. Along with working with the collections Don
possesses many passions and skills and has put that to use
with museum renovation projects. Don is quick to jump in when
a wall needs to be painted or a hinge needs to be reattached.
Thank you Don for all your hard work and dedication to Kingman
Museum and its collections!

Planetarium Assistant
In fall 2008 Kingman Museum
installed a brand new, state of the art planetarium system. The
Digistar 3 SP2 HD Full Dome system is the first of its kind on
the west side of the state. Only 12 systems have been installed
worldwide so far! Planetarium shows will be given every Friday
evening and Saturday afternoon. Due to the small museum staff
size a volunteer is needed to greet visitors, make sure the room
does not go over capacity, place survey forms and pencils on
every chair, and collect the forms and give a KM pencil after
the show. This is a great volunteer opportunity for someone
who enjoys interacting with people and is interested in planetariums.
We are asking volunteers to work a minimum of 8 hours per month.
Fridays 4 to 8 p.m. and /or Saturdays 1 to 5 p.m. |
Administrative Office Assistant:
Help with general office functions such as filing, bulk mailings, data entry
and tasks assigned by the Executive Director. Volunteers should be personable,
task oriented, have the ability to follow through, and an understanding of basic
computer functions. Previous office experience is appreciated. |
 |
 |
Gift Shop/Receptionist:
Work in the Gift Shop and Reception area to greet visitors, collect admissions,
answer questions, answer the telephone, sell gift shop merchandise, and provide
assistance with regular store activities. Gift shop workers must enjoy visiting
with people and have cash handling experience. |
Collections Assistant:
Kingman Museum received a grant in 2007 that will help us complete a physical
inventory of all the museum's artifacts. Volunteers are asked to commit to a
minimum of 4 hours per week. This is a great opportunity to view items that have
never been on display. |
 |
 |
Educational Program Assistant:
Work with the Educator on preparation and set up of programs
and group visits in addition to program development. This position is perfect
for future teachers, retired teachers and educational interns. |
Museum Docent:
Volunteers would become familiar with museum exhibitions and collections. Hours
are flexible. While giving tours, docents administer rules, help implement the
program, and assist the Educator in any way necessary. Applicants
must be 14 years old or older and have transportation. They should enjoy working
with the public and with a variety of age levels. |
 |
 |
Gardening:
Volunteers who enjoy being outdoors may want to tackle this job. The
grounds between the parking lot and the building or the sidewalks
need tending during the growing seasons in Michigan. This
involves grass trimming, weed control, leaf raking, etc. |
Outreach Event Volunteer:
Kingman Museum participates in several community events throughout the year by
hosting informational booths. Volunteers are needed to help work these booths
and inform the community on the museum's programs and exhibitions. Volunteers
would not have to set up the booth, but only be available for questions and hand
out informational flyers. Some outreach events include home shows, Juneteenth,
Cereal City Festival, and Art at the Creek. |
 |
 |
Board Committees:
Serve on one of Kingman Museum's committees. Meetings are once a month. Committees
include collections, marketing, fund development, programming, and building
and grounds. |
